Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times called it "a movie streamlined to evoke the timeless zip of martial arts movies past" and praised the "refreshingly grounded and old-school kinetic" action.[17] Sheila O'Malley, writing at RogerEbert.com, also praised the "thrilling immediacy" of the fight scenes: "you realize you are actually seeing these guys actually do this, as opposed to watching something pieced together later in the editing room".[18] Dave McGinn of the Globe and Mail, in contrast, called the film "ambitious but generic" and filled with "stale conventions".[19]
Uwais will intriguingly get one of the last fights in the movie, squaring off against Chen. It's not known if he'll use his patented silat style, or perhaps something more traditional, but no matter what, one thinks about "The Raid," it's undeniable that he knows how to kick some serious ass. We wonder if any other notable martial arts heavy hitters will be brought in to amp up the film's action.

I want to believe that Keanu had a kind of sage vision for the film, wanting it to be concept-driven (instead of character or plot-driven). Evidence for it is the intensive use of symbolism versus the almost non-existent character backgrounds. This is probably the most difficult kind of movie to pull off, and maybe a bit too big of a bite for a first-timer to chew. In this type of narrative, the subtlety lies not the topping, but the essential: all of it is really a formal game, and it’s not an easy game to master. All the understandable concessions made to satisfy a supposedly shallow audience, from script to fight design, end up devaluating the whole experience, leaving it in a kind of narrative no man’s land. But I’m inclined to applaud the attempt. And that’s probably the Keanu fan in me talking.

Tiger Chen, who plays himself in the movie, is a student of Tai Chi and gets recruited to participate in a deadly underground fight club for the amusement of the elite. Well, innocent Chen slowly gets corrupted by the showrunner, Donaka Mark (Keanu Reeves). Will he be able to turn away from the dark side, or will it consume him?
